Welcome to Oilcake Productions! My name is Andrew Searle. I'm a film technician from Toronto, Canada. A member of I.A.T.S.E. Local 873, the majority of my work is with the Special Effects (physical/practical effects) department, though I occasionally dabble in Set Decoration/Props. In my spare time, I'm an aspiring level designer. I started playing around with Hammer for the Source Engine in May of 2009, and since then have spent many hundreds of hours in the editor, starting with Left 4 Dead and moving on to Counter-Strike: Source, Left 4 Dead 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. My goal from the beginning was to be able to produce great-looking, fun-to-play maps of the same caliber as the official Valve maps. Feel free to contact me for more info about me, my maps, or mapping in general!

Down On The Farm
Left 4 Dead 2 - Scavenge/Survival Map

In January of 2011, I was asked by AlexG at World Of Level Design to help judge their new design challenge, the Winter 2011: Level Design/Game Env Challenge. I decided to have a go at it myself, even though my map wouldn't be considered as an entrant. This project became Down On The Farm, a Scavenge/Survival map for Left 4 Dead 2. Another snow map, working within the "winter" theme, I built upon the techniques I used in Escape From Parkdale (see below), this time creating my own models of snow-covered fences, etc. Would you have the nerve to spend a snowy winter's night Down On The Farm?!!

Escape From Parkdale
Left 4 Dead 2 - Scavenge/Survival Map

This map was created for and won the World Of Level Design 11-Day Level Design Challenge - Winter in January of 2010. The beta version was finished in the 11-day period, but polishing and bug fixes, etc. continued for some time after that. The map is based on the area of Toronto I live in, and features my first custom model, the CN tower in the skybox! Escape From Parkdale is a Scavenge/Survival map for Left 4 Dead 2. Welcome to Toronto. Enjoy your stay!

cs_qasba
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive - Hostage Rescue

In the fall of 2009, I was busy learning as much as I could about the Hammer editor, as fast as I could. As well as designing a well-balnced level, I wanted to know more about texturing in particular, and started working on a Counter-Strike: Source map using the props and textures from Dust. The map was close to completion at the time, but ended up being put on the sidelines due to the Escape From Parkdale project. With the release opf Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, I dragged out the map, blew off the dust (so to speak!), and made a whole ton of changes (mainly asthetic). Gradually, cs_qasba appeared. The map was released on 07/02/2013, and is now available for download on the CS:GO Map Workshop!

Mare Island
Left 4 Dead 2 - Campaign

After completing Escape From Parkdale, I realized that people were much more interested in campaigns for L4D2 than they were in Scavenge and Survival maps. In the early summer of 2010, with Michael Roanhaus on board to help with custom models, textures and detailing, work began on what became known as the Mare Island campaign. The name wasn't to be final, but seeing as the map itself was based on reference photos from Mare Island in California, it stuck as a temporary measure. Eventually to be a 3-map campaign, the project is currently in a state of limbo, with the first map close to completion and the second well under way.
